Android - Half a million activations each day and growing

Last month the number of Android activations was 400,000 but the mobile operating system has continued to grow and grow and this month (June) the number of daily activations sits at 500,000.

Equally impressive is Android founder Andy Rubin's announcement that activations are continuing to grow at 4.4% week over week. At that rate Android activations could exceed 1 million by year end.

Google's Android Market has now generated 4.5 billion downloads, up from 1 billion 12 months ago, according to Ian Carrington, Google's mobile ad sales director.

"A year ago that was 1 billion, and that first billion took two years to happen," Carrington told UK newspaper the Guardian. "The last billion took 60 days."

Recent figures from IDC put Android, running on devices from several manufacturers, in top position globally in the fourth quarter of 2010, and the expectation is it will stay there through 2015. By then Android will have nearly 44% of the smartphone market, equating to nearly 1 billion smartphones shipped that year.
