Over a quarter of firms outsource social media tasks

Social media can be time consuming - engaging in real-time with consumers and creating content on social networks, blogs or platforms such as Twitter. Many businesses are tempted to outsource these tasks and recent research from SocialMedia Examiner shows outsourcing of social is on the rise.

social media marketing outsource.gifA lot has been written about the nuances of social media marketing and the need for policies and allocation of responsibility to ensure brand messaging and reputation are upheld.

Social Media Examiner's "2011 Social Media Marketing Report" (.pdf) found that this need to tightly manage and engage via social media is pushing more businesses to outsource the activity. The number has doubled since 2010, found the report, up from 14% to 28%.

However, while outsourcing is up, it is "behind the scenes" tasks such as design/development and analytics that are the most likely to be outsourced, with 17% and 10% respectively.

Meanwhile, real-time and customer-facing tasks such as community management (4%) and Tweeting (3%) are activities more likely to be kept in-house.

There are many benefits to outsourcing social media tasks, however consideration needs to be given to, among other things, whether outsourcing can effectively maintain authentic brand messaging and company culture.

Mark Evans over at the Sysomos blog lists several points businesses should consider before handing over social media work to outsiders.

Meanwhile, Kent Lewis, president of Anvil Media, gives businesses five reasons not to outsource social media tasks, drawing on the recent Chrysler F-bomb incident on Twitter.
