Nielsen: Android most popular OS in US

A new report, released this Thursday by Nielsen, shows the race between mobile operating systems is still raging, with Google's Android continuing to out-do the competition.

Research In Motion's Blackberry and Apple's iOS both account for 27% of active smartphones, found Nielsen.

However, Nielsen also analyzed use by device manufacturer which, of course, Apple and RIM dominate because they, unlike Android, manufacture their own devices.

Among Android manufacturers it is HTC that shines through (12%) followed by Motorola (10%) and Samsung (5%).

It should be noted that the above figures are for November through to January and do not, therefore, reflect any effect the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 with Verizon Communications in early February may have had.
