Nearly 90% of Chinese are phone subscribers

New figures released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show that the vast majority of the population now subscribe to either a fixed line or mobile phone.

china flag.jpgOf China's 1.34 billion people, 1.17 billion (87%) now use a fixed line phone, or a mobile phone.

However, the figures also show more Chinese are ditching fixed line phones in favor of mobile devices. The number of mobile users rose nearly 20 million in the first two months of this year, while fixed line telecommunication companies lost 918,000.

Meanwhile, authorities in China's capital, Beijing, are coming under fire from some communications specialists and human rights campaigners after considering the launch of a mobile tracking system. Some believe the system has been set up with ulterior motives in mind.

Known as the "Information Platform of Realtime Citizen Movement", the system has been widely reported as being considered for the tracking of the day-to-day movements of the city's 20 million or so residents to allow authorities to monitor and manage road and pedestrian traffic.

No doubt those stuck in the country's 100km traffic jam last year, that went on for 9 days, would appreciate some traffic advice, but the data collected won't, at first, be available to the man (stuck) on the street.
