HTML5 Mobile Game Developer Fund announced first recipients

You don't have to be a rocket scientist - or a teen/tween - to know that gaming is hot. But as more consumers move into the gaming space, developers and advertisers are looking for more ways to interact and engage. The mobile space is one area they are having success, which led to the release of MocoSpace's $1 Million HTML5 Mobile Game Developer Fund.

The MocoSpace fund offers cash for game development as well as marketing support for gaming titles. The companies receiving the funding are New Game Town, Joyplay and Kooky Panda. New Game Town is focused on social gaming, Joyplay creates free online games from board to card games while Kooky Panda creates mobile-social based games.

"Kooky Panda firmly believes in mobile browser-based gaming and we've put all our chips on HTML5, so we were pumped to get some funding from MocoSpace to help turbo-charge Kooky Panda's growth in that direction," said Cherry Wu, CEO and Co-Founder of Kooky Panda. "Our first game is a compelling fantasy game called "The Lost World" and we have a half-dozen other HTML5 games in the pipeline."

To date, most mobile games have been created in-app, but as the mobile web has expanded, developers have begun creating browser based games. These games are available to play no matter which device consumers choose, meaning that developers need only develop one game instead of many apps for a single game.

The announcement follows research from IGN and Ipsos which shows that gamer demographics are growing. The report indicates that younger gamers, those in their teens or early 20s, are still the biggest demographic, but that people of all ages are now playing. From social and mobile games to gaming consoles, it seems that games are a growing category.
