It is aimed a companies with between one and 35 employees that send up to 10,000 text messages per month.

Clickatell's platform isn't necessarily aimed at sending out bulk messaging. Instead, it offers small businesses an immediate and cost-effective way to deliver timely, personalized messages.

For instance, a dry-cleaning firm may want to send a message to say items are ready for collection, or a bookshop let a customer know a book on order has arrived.

While the platform can be used to send out marketing messages, Pieter de Viliers, CEO and co-founder of Clickatell, believes text messaging is "not intended to be used as a mass send-and-forget technology. Certainly, folks don't like to receive an SMS message if it's spam".

"Mobile is the new medium of consumer engagement, and brands from Lagos to London are recognizing this."

Meanwhile, Facebook has acquired group messaging company Beluga, a deal that could pave the way for marketers to target mobile users by any number of categories, including local targeting and perhaps even based on a Facebook user's "Likes".
