Increase in mobile gaming sign of the times?

It used to be that when people talked about multi-tasking they were talking about work. Juggling year-end reports with new ad campaign duties or handling customer service calls in the midst of writing a press release. Today multi-tasking has taken on a different tone, thanks in large part to mobile devices, and when we talk about multi-tasking we mean working while playing.

mocospace.jpgHow big is the mobile gaming world? According to MocoSpace their second game release, Stage Hero, has more than 350,000 active, monthly users. Those games are playing at least two times each day. Overall, MocoSpace has more than 15 million users. The growth of their mobile titles has pushed their plans for 2011. According to CEO Justin Siegel, they will double their planned launch titles this year.

"The revenue and popularity of our games business has exceeded our initial expectations, compelling us to scale our title catalog for 2011 and double the number of titles we plan to launch," said MocoSpace CEO Justin Siegel. "We've seen a strong demand from members and new users, as people are finding that games are a fun way to meet people and have fun on their phone."

MocoSpace's games are browser based and compatible with both iPhone and Android smartphones.

A recent Unicast study found that female gamers are more highly engaged than male gamers; their report also predicts that gaming will be a $55 billion industry by 2012. Their research is for the overall gaming universe, not just mobile gaming. Meanwhile Kelly Perdew of Fastpoint Games suggests that the gaming fad is more than a short-term thing. According to Perdew as more consumers switch to smartphones, mobile gaming will become even more prevalent.

What that means for brands is higher engagement and additional options in the advertising field. From creating branded games to sponsoring game playing time or even offering virtual rewards to players, there are a number of ways brands can engage with gamers throughout their mobile sessions.
