Who's using tablets, how and why

If you think tablets are a short-term, use only for play thing, think again. A new report, out today from Harris Interactive and Fuze Box, indicates that tablets may be much bigger than many believe - for work and for play. Researchers found that by 2014 25% of American adults plan to buy a tablet, and many of them plan to use tablets for work not just recreation.

Already an estimated 9 million Americans own tablet computers, with many using tablets to browse the web (78%), check email (75%) or read newspapers/ebooks (53%), but those are down-time activities, right? So, what else are people using tablets for?

Here is how some are using or plan to use tablets at work:

• Used for business correspondence (58%)
• Web conferences (37%)
• Marketing efforts (34%)
• Training (33%)
• Accounting (32%)

"Since before the iPad launched in April, we've persisted that tablets would soon become a widely used business tool," said Jeff Cavins, CEO of Fuze Box. "With 2 in 5 tablet owners using their device for business by 2014, we have officially entered the post PC era and the potential is there to reinvent the business environment for collaboration with portable and tactile computing devices, complete with cameras, document sharing, cloud computing, and storage."

Which demographics are most likely to tablet-compute? Although both men and women seem interested, men are more likely to be early adopters of tablets, and they are likely to use the machines for different things. More than half of women say they'll use tablets for social networking. As for age differences, tablets are skewing toward the younger demos, with 26% of those 18-34 reporting an interest in purchasing a tablet. Only about 15% of those 55+ plan to buy a tablet.
