Ecomm spend pushes past $28 billion

Two days until Christmas and etailers are likely counting their green already. Why? Because consumers have turned up to spend online in 2010 like no other year. In fact, metrics firm comScore is reporting that the 2010 holiday spend has pushed past $28 billion for the first time ever.

comscore.gif2010 now holds four of the all-time high spending days including one day, Cyber Monday, when the spend surpassed $1 billion for a single shopping day. Other high shopping days include Green Monday (954 million), Free Shipping day ($942 million) and Final Weekend ($900 million). In all, the final shopping weekend say consumers increase spending by 17%.

"Spending growth has remained strong right through the final shopping weekend of the holiday season," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "The growth rate of 17 percent witnessed during the final weekend capped off the heaviest online spending week of all time at $5.5 billion. Although there are still nearly two weeks remaining before the end of the year, holiday spending is inching very close to the total for the entire 2009 holiday season, a sign of just how much the online retail landscape has improved in the past year."

For the past three weeks, the online spend has been steadily above $5 billion per week, with the last full week of shopping (December 13-December 19) showing sales of nearly $6 billion.

According to Experian/Hitwise, the hottest online destinations for the week ending December 18 were Amazon (15% visit share), Walmart (7% visit share) and Target (4.5% visit share). BestBuy, JCPenney and Sears were also heavy hitters for the week when consumers spent more than they ever had in the past.
