comScore: Nearly $22 billion spent so far during 2010 holidays

Green Monday is here and so far shoppers are turning out in droves online for the 2010 holiday shopping spree. According to comScore, the 2010 holiday spend is rapidly approaching $22 billion, with spending today expected to push etailers over the top. Not bad for a season which many expected to be relatively flat on the spending side.

Green Monday, traditionally the second Monday in December, is supposed to be the heaviest of online shopping days as savvy buyers try to fit those last purchases in and have them shipped on time.

"Growth rates during the most recent week settled in at around 11%, which is consistent with our forecasted spending growth rate for the holiday season," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "With more than $5 billion in spending this past week, it's clear that while deal-seeking shoppers may have driven stronger than anticipated spending early in the season, Americans continue to demonstrate a significantly greater willingness to spend online this year than in seasons past. This coming week, beginning with Green Monday, should see some of the heaviest online shopping activity of the season and we expect at least one more day to surpass the billion dollar spending threshold."

What is perhaps most interesting is the number of days where spending has topped the $900 million mark. In 2009 there were three record-breaking individual sales days, one of which topped the $900 million mark.

So far, 2010 holds five of the top ten spending days on record. December 9 ($898 million spent), December 8 ($901 million spent), November 30 ($911 million spent) and December 6 ($943 million spent). And the largest spending day, November 29 - Cyber Monday 2010 - when consumers spent a record $1.028 billion online.

Total's from the Green Monday spend and from Free Shipping Day, which is set for Friday, December 17 are expected to show strong numbers as well. Will those days push spending to even higher heights? We'll have to wait and see.
