MocoSpace: Gamers spending more outside socnets

When it comes to online gaming, the big money as of late is in virtual goods purchasing. Because of that many game publishers and even advertisers have gone into the social space as well, but they may be in the wrong place. A new report from MocoSpace indicates that gamers using their browser-based games are spending 13 times more on virtual goods than social gamers.

MocoSpace launched their first browser based game, Street Wars, in October; since the launch the game has seen 500,000 unique players, half of players playing daily and with iPhone and Android players spending about $13 per month on virtual goods. That is 13 times more than Facebook gamers are spending. About 4% of players are Moco Gold users.

"We are thrilled with the initial test of Street Wars, as it truly brings together the social, entertainment and monetization aspects of our business," said Justin Siegel, MocoSpace CEO. "With our platform partners can tap into our social graph, leverage our direct billing system and send notifications and invites through our API to a large, highly engaged mobile audience."

MocoSpace builds games for use directly in the mobile browser rather than within an app because they believe that this gives the games more versatility. For example, a game can be played on an iPhone or Android unit within the browser, but might not be available if only offered through iPhone or Android's app store.

In April, comScore reported that nearly half of smartphone consumers (47%) played mobile games at least once per month with 27% playing downloaded games. Only 5% were playing browser based games; however throughout 2010 smartphone adoption has increased by large numbers so that percentage has likely increased.
