Is Facebook about to take on email giants Gmail and Hotmail?

The Internet is awash with stories that social networking giant Facebook is about to unveil some major changes to its messaging system that could see it challenge current big web email services.

by Helen Leggatt

It's already Monday here in New Zealand but, as the rest of the world sleeps, the Internet is buzzing with reports that Facebook will soon be releasing an email system that could leave rivals Google Gmail and Microsoft Hotmail with a headache.

And no wonder - even a 10% take up from Facebookers would equate to around 50 million users.

"Our understanding is that this is more than just a UI refresh for Facebook's existing messaging service with POP access tacked on," writes TechCrunch's Jason Kincaid.

"Rather, Facebook is building a full-fledged webmail client, and while it may only be in early stages come its launch Monday, there's a huge amount of potential here."

We will all soon see if the reports are correct when Facebook announces its move during an invite-only press event taking place today (Monday, November 15) at 9:30 AM in San Francisco.

I, for one, am looking forward to more competition because it leads to more innovation.

Some people will say, why do we need another web-based email? Well, people said the same thing when gmail came out, and look at the innovations that gmail has brought.

I started with Hotmail, then switched to Yahoo mail due to too much spam at Hotmail; then my work forced me to get a gmail account. Gmail is great, I like the threaded messages. But it is slow, and the GUI is not that friendly.

Let's see if FB can up the ante. Maybe I'll switch again.

It's nice to see FB giving Google a run for Google's money. Too often that is what Google does to other companies; it's payback tiime, Google.

  • Very interesting, I have just written some Social Media Training news about the ongoing war between Facebook and Google, who will win in the fight to control your identity?

  • have at it

I like gmail and its other features now.

Will find it hard to switch.

    Go Mark Z Go !!!
