Hitwise: 25% of pageviews are from Facebook

A lot has been said about the power of Facebook lately, so a recent Experian/Hitwise report may come as no surprise. Still, it bears comment. The report indicates that 25% (1 in 4) pageviews are now coming from Facebook, an important milestone as the web becomes more fragmented and more consumers turn to the online space for information.

facebook.pngRecently comScore reported that Facebook served about 25% of display ad impressions (US) and nearly 33% of display ad impressions (UK) through Q3 2010. So, obviously consumers are engaging with the social giant; but Hitwise's report sheds more light on what consumers are doing in the social space. In addition to engaging with ads, consumers are engaging with content.

Hitwise Director of Research Heather Dougherty notes that Facebook is now serving more content than YouTube. During the reporting period, Dougherty noted that Facebook served just over 24% of pageviews, nearly four times the pageviews that YouTube served (6.93). Facebook is also serving more content than search giants Google (4.13% of pageviews) and Yahoo (0.54%).

Overall, Facebook is now delivering more visits than any other website, about 10.28%, ahead of Google (7.21%) and YouTube (3.19%). And, for social networks in general, Facebook is delivering more than 61% of visits. YouTube delivers nearly 20% of all visits while MySpace has fallen to deliver only about 4% of all visits.

It isn't only Americans who are tuning in to Facebook. comScore reports that Facebook is the third most-visited website (10.7 million users) in Argentina, following Microsoft (12.7 million users) and Google (11.6 million users); a tide of Chilean and Mexican consumers are also converting to Facebook.

I started a website recently and purchased 10,000 Facebook fans from for our Facebook page and the results were amazing! I passed all my competitors when it comes to the number of Facebook fans... some competitors have been in business since 1999, but now we have 20 times more fans than them on Facebook, which made it seem that I've been in business much longer than them !

WOW! Very Interesting. I think I'll share it with my FB family!
