Partnership beams digi-coupons to mobiles

Mall shoppers, pay attention. And, brands, it wouldn't hurt for you to listen, too. A new platform will push digital coupons to consumers' mobile devices while they are shopping. From Shopkick, the app platform shoots digital coupons and offers from mall stores to shoppers' cell phones as they wander the mall. Simon Property Group, one of the largest mall holdings in the US, has signed on to utilize the platform for its shoppers.

shopkick.jpgTo begin, the partnership between Shopkick and Simon Property Group will include 25 malls in large cities such as New York and Chicago, but there are plans to beam the program into 100 or more malls in the upcoming months. Simon has 370 mall properties nationwide, it can be assumed that if the first roll-outs go well, shoppers across America will begin receiving digital coupons as they shop.

For retailers and brands, the app simply needs to be installed on small speakers at the entrance to their stores. The sounds, which can't be heard by human ears, are then transmitted into consumer cell phones as they walk the mall. Consumers must have the app installed to receive the coupons and offers.

According to a recent National Retail Federation report, July saw back-to-school shoppers increase their purchases 3% over 2009 numbers. Families with school age children are expected to spend more than $590 this year; families with college aged students are expected to spend slightly more.

"While we expect consumers to respond favorably to these [back-to-school] promotions, sustained growth remains elusive as we look to the economy to add jobs to bolster consumer confidence," said Matthew Shay, CEO and President of the NRF.

The bulk of sales will be clothing/apparel related, which makes an app like Shopkick even more valuable heading through the back-to-school season and into the holiday shopping season in November and December.
