Amazon boasts over $1 billion in sales via mobile

Recent reports have suggested some marketers aren't optimizing their online offerings for mobile users. In fact, it appears some marketers just don't see the importance of mobile device optimization. Perhaps a recent announcement from Amazon will demonstrate jut how much business can be done via mobile.

Hot on the heels of Amazon's news that Kindle books now outsell hard-covers comes the announcement that the firm does over $1 billion in sales via mobile devices each year.

Amazon didn't reveal how much of its mobile commerce sales came from owners of Amazon's Kindle buying e-books.

"The leading mobile commerce device today is the smartphone, but we're excited by the potential of the new category of wireless tablet computers," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. "Over time, tablet computers could become a meaningful additional driver for our business."

Last October Amazon.com extended its 1-Click checkout experience to its mobile site.

According to a recent survey from eROI, just 31.6% of marketers believed optimizing digital content for mobile devices was "important". Almost 30% "weren't sure" and a quarter said they are currently testing to determine the importance.

Unbelievably, 15% thought optimized mobile experiences "didn't matter". Amazon begs to differ.

  • They must be pretty incredible at social media marketing or something. That's a lot of mobile sales. Is that only sales on a mobile platform, or sales from a mobile device? I know a lot of people still use the full site on the mobile device when making purchases.

  • Amazon's success in the mobile space is certainly a testament to the power of mobile e-commerce. Too often, however, brands simply re-hash existing site content and fail to create a compelling reason to re-visit the app. Amazon certainly solved that problem with in-store price comparisons.
