Hitwise: Vuvuzela buzz reflected in search figures

Recent data from Hitwise, with a World Cup twist, has confirmed the U.K.'s obsession not only with football, but also with perhaps the most annoying sporting accompaniment ever - the vuvuzela.

fifa world cup south africa logo.pngLast week there were more searches for the controversial horns than Robert Green or Wayne Rooney. In fact, there was a 20% increase in searches for "vuvuzela". Perhaps more worryingly, there was also an increase in those looking to buy one.

Thankfully, there were also many searches relating to the call to ban the "annoying" instrument. The BBC has received hundreds of complaints about the migraine-inducing buzzing sound the horns emit en-masse and, for those football fans whose ears can't stand the drone any longer, there are even MP3's available for download that, when played, drastically decrease the sound of the vuvuzelas.

Nonetheless, according to Goal.com, tens of thousands of the horns have been bought in the U.K. from shops including Sainsburys and online store Amazon. Over 1.5 million have been sold in Europe alone since last October and its inventor, South African Neil van Schalkwyk, has threatened to produce one for Britain's Premier League.

I wonder if searches for "ibuprofen" have also spiked?
