Nielsen: Time spent with socnets, blogs surges in U.K.

British Internet users spend the equivalent of one day each month online, according to new data released by the U.K. Online Measurement Company (UKOM), a 65% rise on three years ago. Nowadays more are searching for news than porn while social networks and blogs are where the majority of online time is spent.

The UKOM's study found that the average British Internet surfer now spends 22 hours and 15 minutes online each month.

Back in 2007, social networking and blogging accounted for just 9% of online time in the U.K., now it is the most popular online activity, with sites like Facebook and Twitter accounting for 22.7% of total online time.

The time spent social networking has eaten away at time spent instant messaging, which has seen a 66% drop in share of online time. Time spent online has also fallen for classifieds and search.

The UKOM analysis discovered that sending and receiving email was the second most popular thing to do on the Internet (7.2% of online time), just ahead of playing online games (6.9%).

"Despite the large increase in the amount of time people spend online and the increasing proliferation of websites and online services, one thing has remained constant and that is the bulk of time accounted for by communicating, networking and playing games," said Alex Burmaster, VP of Global Communications for Nielsen's Online division.

"These are the pillars on which the Internet as a heavily used medium are built."
