Facebook serves most banner ads in Q1

Another month and another milestone for the social networking behemoth that is Facebook. comScore has just released data showing the website served up more banner ads than any other website on the Internet during the first quarter of 2010.

by Helen Leggatt

In the first 3 months of this year, Facebook served up a whopping 176.3 billion ads - more than 50 billion each month, more than one billion a day. That total represents 16.2% of the total number of banner ads served up across the entire Internet.

Yahoo came in second with 131.6 billion banner ads served and Microsoft with 60.2 billion, according to comScore data quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

However, the data excludes ads that Yahoo and Microsoft delivered to third-party websites through their networks, a major source of revenue for each.

While the growth of Facebook ads is impressive, it has yet to generate the sorts of revenues that Yahoo and Microsoft bring in. Facebook is expected to generate over $1 billion in 2010 while Yahoo earned $6.5 billion last year.
