More mobile predictions - mobile app downloads to explode

If 2010 doesn't turn out to be the year of the mobile, it will certainly be the year of mobile research and forecasts. A new report from Chetan Sharma Consulting, for one of the world's largest app stores, Getjar, predicts an explosion in mobile apps over the coming two years.

Mobile app downloads - including paid downloads and mobile advertising - will increase by a whopping 92% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to 2012, found the study. Last year the download figure stood at 7 billion and by 2012 Chetan Sharma predicts this will rise to 50 billion.

The global mobile app market will be worth $17.5 billion in 2012, more than CD sales, which Sharma predicts will be $13.83 billion. The revenue from mobile apps, which includes both paid downloads and revenue from advertising and virtual goods, is expected to increase from $4.1 billion in 2009 to $17.5 billion by 2012 at the rate of 62% CAGR.

"As the number of active data subscribers across the planet continues to grow, and as new forms of consumer electronics devices come online, we will continue to see the proliferation of apps in many directions," concludes Sharma in his "Sizing Up the Mobile App Market" report (.pdf).
