Less than a quarter of Twitter users active
What's the definition of a true Twitter user? According to Barracuda Labs it's someone who has at least 10 followers, follows at least 10 people and has tweeted at least 10 times. So, with activity levels set that low the definition must encompass most users, right? Wrong.
According to the Internet and email security firm's Annual Report, just 21% of Twitter users fall under their definition of "true users".
However, Barracuda's figures also show that those users are becoming more active. They observed more users following and being followed back as well as more tweets being sent.
The number of users with zero followers has dropped from 30% in mid-2009 to 17%. At the same time there's been a 30% rise in the number of users that have 10 or more followers.
Over a third of those who signed up for a Twitter account never tweeted (34%). This is an improvement on June 2009's 37%, but still a large proportion of the user-base.
Another nugget of information from the survey is that the most active users on Twitter aren't necessarily the ones with the most followers. In fact, users with an average of 1,000 followers seem to tweet the most - far more than those with less than 100 or over 100,000 followers.
Barracuda's "Red Carpet Era" theory could explain why many with 100,000 or more followers don't actually tweet very often - it's because they don't need to do so in order to attract followers - their celebrity status does that for them.
