Google: 64% of consumers yet to complete holiday shopping

It may only be a matter of days until Christmas, but a large percentage of consumers have yet to complete their holiday shopping, according to new data from the Google/OTX Consumer Pulse Check survey.

by Helen Leggatt

While consumers splashed more cash in the first five weeks of the holiday shopping season than last year, 64% have yet to complete their quest to find and purchase gifts.

In fact, Google found that 19% of holiday shoppers involved in their survey had not, as of Sunday 6 December, begun to research their holiday purchases and 29% had yet to buy a single gift for loved ones.

"Though excellent news for retailers headed into the next few weeks, we certainly hope none of these last minute shoppers are related to us!" quipped Google's Retail Team member, Eric Lopez.

So, the message to online retailers is to keep the marketing momentum going, focusing campaigns and skewing web content to bring to the fore elements that will be of concern to consumers at this late stage such as delivery times, accurate inventories, easily accessible and efficient customer service and a fast-loading website.
