Still think Facebook's a fad?

If Facebook is a waste of time, a fad, a flash in the pan, then how come its membership and the average amount of time spent on the social networking site both continue to rise?

facebook logo.gifFacebook's membership continues to grow at a rate of knots, recently breaking the 300 million barrier. In the last nine months alone Facebook has doubled its number of users, starting the year with 150 million active users.

Nielsen Online's recent data shows that the amount of time users spend on the social networking behemoth is also rising. In July, users spent an average of 4 hours, 39 minutes on Facebook per month. Since then that number has risen with users spending an average of 5 hours, 46 minutes on Facebook in the month of August.

By way of comparison, the average time spent on Facebook is now around triple that spent on Google and almost four times that spent on YouTube.

And, now that Facebook is turning a profit twelve months ahead of plan, it could finally be moving out of the realms of "fad" and evolving into a fully fledged business.
