MessageLabs: Botnets a threat to email marketing

Although this isn't technically 'new' news, a recent MessageLabs report indicates that botnets may be the biggest threat to email marketing. According to the latest numbers from MessageLabs, botnets are reponsbile for 88% of spam emails sent; botnets are responsible for more than 150 billion spam emails sent each day. No wonder consumers aren't reading legitimate email messages.

With the closures of McColo and PriceWert in recent months, many marketers felt they would have a better chance at getting messages to inboxes. But in the wake of these two closures, even more botnets have surfaced.

First, GRUM. MessageLabs researchers have found this to be the most active botnet, responsible for more than 20% of spam messages. Next comes BOBAX, responsible for nearly 16% of spam messages. RUSTOCK is the largest of all botnets, using between 1.3 million and 1.9 million computers to spam unwitting consumers.

Finally come MEGA D, responsible for sending one spam message per minute, and MAAZBEN, one of the newest botnets. MAAZBEN has been busy sending casino-spam and has only been 'on the scene' since May.
