New data shows rise of online-only catalogs

New data from the National Directory of Catalogs holds few surprises. The number of catalogs available in print-only format has dropped and the number of online-only format catalogs has risen.

Catalogs available in print-only formats fell from 1,573 to 1,347 in the year from March 2008, according to the 2009 National Directory of Catalogs, published by Oxbridge Communications, Inc.. The data was released this week by

During the same time period, the number of online-only catalogs rose from 1,868 to 2,011.

"Online catalogs are also continuing to grow, accounting for 10,905 (including 8,894 that are available in print and online format and 2,011 online only) of the 12,524 catalogs listed in our new directory, but print catalogs are still seen as vital, with 10,241 of the total (8,894 that are available in print and online format and 1,347 print only)," said Trish Hagood, president of Oxbridge Communications, Inc..

As well as simplifying and speeding up the purchase process, online catalogs are environmentally friendly and can be continually updated and redistributed at a fraction of the cost of print versions.
