Google pulls plug on AdSense video units

If you're currently using AdSense for video, you've got about one month to reorganize your strategy, according to an announcement late last week on the official Google blog.

According to Google's announcement, AdSense video units just aren't having the impact they had hoped and, as from now, publishers can no longer sign up for the service, which was introduced just under a year ago.

The end of April will see all existing units replaced with YouTube banners or YouTube video boxes and Google suggests that publishers address this by putting traditional AdSense units in their place. Google assures publishers that any income generated from video units will continue to be credited to AdSense accounts.

Publishers who want to continue to display video content from YouTube can do so via YouTube direct. "Visit any specific video page and look for the code in the 'Embed' box, or sign in to your YouTube account to create a playlist," explains Arlene Lee of the Inside AdSense team.

"In addition, please note that this change won't affect the availability of other video-related ads options -- video ads may appear in your AdSense for content ad units if you've opted into image ads, and AdSense for video is still accepting applications from eligible publishers who produce video content."
