As economy worsens online dating, travel heats up

As online marketers look for new areas in which to target in-market consumers, two specific niches may be opening up. According to a recent HitWise report online dating and online travel websites continue to see an upswing in traffic.

Why are consumers looking at and visiting online dating websites? It could be a sign of the times. As men and women worry about their jobs, homes or investments they may not want to face a night in the single spotlight. Online dating websites allow them to feel out their options without the possibility of a face-to-face rejection.

The top dating site? In both the US and the UK, the top rated site, for market share, is free dating site according to HitWise.

Travel also continues to be a top draw for surfers. Whether planning a trip or dreaming of a trip, online travel hubs continue to draw consumers. The biggest benefit? Consumers are spending nearly 10 minutes per session on-site, giving marketers a huge opportunity to engage these consumers. The length of time spent on-site indicates a rather large engagement level; studies show that the more engaged the consumer the more likely they are to react or interact with a relevant ad.

While online dating and traveling consumers are not the perfect fit for all online marketers, for some marketers information such as this can help in campaign planning.
