Will Yangaroo's US patent give content distributors more control?
It very well could. Yangaroo's 'Content Distribution System and Method' patent (United States Patent Application #10/431,854) has been allowed by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent is said to give content distributors the ability to select who can view their content.
According to Yangaroo the methodology allows content providers the select who can access their content. It also sets release conditions that verify users prior to their being able to access or view the content online. This would give content providers such as musicians or even advertisers more control over who watches, downloads or receives their content; by controlling who can access specific content these providers protect their intellectual property and give their content more monetary value.
The US patent is sistered to the Canadian patent (patent number 2,407,774) granted in 2005.
John Heaven, President and CEO of YANGAROO said, "This patent will provide us with a further significant competitive advantage and will add substantial value to our company. The music and advertising industries understand and respect the value of intellectual property and we will continue to lead our sector through innovation and invention. We will maintain our focus on expanding our patent portfolio and plan to vigorously protect our intellectual property rights."
