Social networking via mobile phone on the increase
Recent surveys have shown that most mobile phone users take their mobiles with them wherever they go. It's this portability and 'always on' technology that is prompting the increasing use of mobile for social networking.
A survey conducted by mobile community itsmy.com involving 15,000 of their active members from around the globe revealed that the average user visits 160 mobile Internet pages per day, with heavy users spending up to 2.5 hours logged on.
The majority of mobile Internet time is spent checking and responding to personal messages, found the survey, along with keeping tabs on where their friends are and what they're doing and uploading pictures or video to personal mobile sites.
Sabine Irrgang, COO of itsmy.com, believes mobile social portals are the new Web 2.0 playground, adding "Almost 12% of the itsmy.com community members are still in bed when they check their personal messages for the first time. A mobile social networking portal is the place where you can reach and will meet people in future."
Not even current financial concerns can tear mobile phone users from the mobile Internet access. Despite high prices, only one-third tend to reduce their mobile Internet activity.
Results of a recent study from Knowledge Networks revealed that over 60% of mobile phone users carry their device with them 'at all times'.
