comScore: December brings biggest online shopping day ever

E-Tailers have a few things to crow about this holiday season, specifically that holiday sales are continuing to grow despite early forecasts of dismal holiday sales. Through December 12, online shoppers have spent nearly $19.5 billion online, essentially the same amount that was spent in 2007.

Cyber Monday got the season off to a bright start with sales of $8.2 billion, then came December 9 when online shoppers spent $887 million - the largest amount spent online ever.

"After a very strong first week of December, e-commerce sales growth slowed somewhat during the most recent week," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "With Christmas now fast approaching, look for online retailers to continue to offer enticing last-minute deals, including discounts on expedited shipping, to spur a final wave of spending. In fact, some retailers are even willing to offer free shipping as late as December 18 this year with a guarantee that the shipment will arrive by Christmas Eve. It will be interesting to see the impact that this offer has in terms of pulling additional spending from retail stores to the online channel."

Apparel and Accessory sales have shown the highest growth (21% Year over Year) followed by Books and Magazines (18% growth) and Flowers/Greetings/Gifts (18% growth).
