How to cash in on the mommy blogger craze

Rich media, specifically blogs, podcasts and video, are a great resource for marketers trying to reach the Mommy Market. According to a recent report from Marketing Sherpa moms, who spend more than $2 trillion each year and control more than three-quarters of household income, are most likely to become engaged with new media.

Blogs and podcasts are especially important for moms because they can participate in the platforms. Moms like to add opinions to blogs (60%) and even like to voice their own opinions (29%)through their own online media space. Because of their spending power and their affinity for new media, moms are an increasingly important audience segment for marketers.

Before targeting a random mommy blog with high traffic numbers, be sure to do your research. Start out by reading the blogs. Find out what the writer-mom has to say and how her readers are interacting with her. Next, start interacting with the mommy blogger. Ask how you can join her blog and while you're asking, find out what their goals are. If her goals and your goals are similar, it may be time to pitch an advertising deal.

Once the blog is targeted and an agreement is reached, focus on the content. Make sure what you offer the mom and what the mom offers you begins and ends with strong content. If readers can use the content in their daily lives, they will keep coming back to the blog day after day.

Finally, once the content is settled upon, come up with your campaign. Make sure the event or campaign you develop is something that will engage the current readership and be interesting enough to get new readers to stop in.

Moms are eager to share their lives; they are even more eager to pull in a little extra income from their time spent online. By engaging moms and their audiences, marketers can increase the ROI of their campaigns.
