Russia's online ad spend rising
Online advertising in Russia is growing at a rate of knots, reports The Moscow Times, a fact that is not surprising given the rising number of Internet users in the country.
Recent figures from the Public Opinion Foundation put the number of Russians online at around 37.7 million, or 29% of the population.
In the first half of 2008, online advertising in Russia was up 73% on the same period last year, according to a report from MindShare Interaction, reports The Moscow Times. The estimated $260 million was spent mostly on contextual ads (62%) and display ads (38%).
"So far in Russia, most of the online ads are distributed among three major search portals -- Yandex, Rambler and Google, which recently acquired Begun," said Andrei Chernyshov, general director of the AdWatch advertising agency.
The top 10 online display advertisers, as reported by the Russian business daily Kommersant, were as follows:
Ford Motor Company - $4.6m
MTS - $2.5m
Megafon - $2.3m
General Motors - $2m
VimpelCom - $1.9m
Peugeot Citroen - $1.6m
Nissan - $1.5m
Samsung - $1.3m
Honda - $1.2m
Proctor & Gamble - $1.1m
MindShare Interaction projects that online advertising spending in Russia will reach over $600 million by year end.
