Global online video revenues to rocket
Global online video revenues are expected to almost quadruple from a projected $1.2bn this year, to $4.5bn by 2012, according to recent figures released by media research company In-Stat. Yet, a surprising number still prefer physical discs when purchasing movies or TV shows.
The research revealed 90% of U.S. households would be broadband-enabled by 2012, and that 94% of those households would watch online video.
In-Stat’s study, entitled, 'World Report on Online Video' also found that 39% of adult respondents intend to purchase or rent DVDs via the Internet by 2012.
However, some consumers still prefer to purchase packaged media, particularly when buying movies or television shows. This, says In-Stat analyst Gerry Kaufhold, is because of the associated artwork and collectability factor involved such as special features and extra content.
