Emerging media growth slowdown ahead

The growth in emerging media is slowing in the U.S., according to a recently released report from MAGNA, although some platforms are still showing strong growth and potential.

magna%20logo.gifIn his presentation on emerging media MAGNA’s Brian Wieser illustrates the predicted growth of many platforms including social media, search, gaming, interactive TV, online video and digital out-of-home. Despite a forecasted 31.1% rate of growth for 2009, this is still a slowdown from previous years.

The dominant emerging medium will remain search, forecast to grow by 24% to $13.8 billion in 2009. This does, however, represent a slowdown from this year’s forecast of 26.5%.

Online video will be the fastest-growing emerging media, illustrates Wieser. He expects gains of 45% to just over $800 million in 2009, although this is still a comedown from the 67.4% experienced in 2007.

Mobile will grow just 42.6% in 2009, a marked difference from 2007’s 118.2% and the forecasted growth of 74.2% for this year.

Wieser’s presentation also forecasts emerging media such as social and gaming, and can be viewed free online.
