Click fraud, botnet use rises

Click fraud continues to climb year-on-year, according to the latest Click Fraud Index figures, and botnets continue to be increasingly responsible for fraudulent traffic.

by Helen Leggatt

Estimated click fraud for Q2 08 may have decreased slightly from the first quarter, showing a slight drop from 16.3% to 16.2%, but it’s up from 15.8% in the same period last year.

What is more worrying is that the methods used to commit click fraud are becoming increasingly complex and harder to detect. Click Forensics’ latest figures show that botnets now account for over 25% of all click fraud.

Tom Cuthbert, president of Click Forensics, believes the threat from botnets is a huge concern. “Online advertisers should be extra vigilant in watching for traffic from botnets in their search marketing campaigns,” he said.
