Are you prepared for an online reputation crisis?
Are you monitoring and managing your online reputation? Many companies are, according to a new survey, but most aren’t prepared for a reputation crisis.
A report from Paul Dunay of the Buzz Marketing for Technology blog contains some great insights into what companies are, and aren’t, doing to protect their reputations online.
Sponsored by MarketingProfs and Trackur, the survey asked, among other things, whether businesses were monitoring their online reputation, if they had a handle on their current online reputation and if they were prepared for a reputation crisis.
Findings include:
- 60% agreed they had a strong understanding of their current reputation.
- 53% plan to make reputation monitoring a strategic priority this year.
- 55% are not adequately prepared for a reputation crisis.
The most important part of reputation management is tracking online conversations. This can be done via free online tools such as Technorati or Google Alerts. For websites with large volumes of social media a subscription-based service may be more appropriate, recommends the report (.pdf).
What do you do when you find your product or brand being bad-mouthed online? Tad Chef at SEOptimise has posted 8 simple steps to emergency reputation management which include the basics of most good customer service – show you care, deal with the problem quickly and efficiently and have an official company representative do the talking.

A monitoring tool is often needed for corporate clients trying to monitor their reputation to the highest standard. DIY is definitely an option for small businesses but I sincerely believe monitoring on a large scale is better carried out by a specialized tool.
