Antipodean online sales conversion rates beat Northern Hemisphere

A new study has revealed that even those in the far flung corners of the globe are as tech-savvy and online as the U.S. and the U.K.

by Helen Leggatt

Antipodean Internet users have been found to be even more tech-savvy than their northern hemisphere cousins, according to a new survey by Coremetrics Australia and NZ.

Online surfers in both Australia and New Zealand are almost twice as likely to convert to sales than consumers in other major markets, including the U.S. and the U.K. The average global conversion rate was found to be 2.96 purchases per 100 online sessions, but the Aussies and the Kiwis converted at a rate of 4.4.

"The significantly higher conversion rate of Aussies and Kiwis suggests consumers in the region are much more confident and comfortable with buying online than previously thought," said Kevin Mackin, general manager for Coremetrics ANZ.

The report also found that typical order values for Australian and New Zealand purchases were considerably less - 34% down on the global average.
