Yahoo OneSearch reaches 600 million subscribers
It was recently announced that Google is the leading supplier of mobile search but, as usual, rival Yahoo is yapping at their heels.
A further six Asian telecoms firms have signed up to offer Yahoo’s mobile search service. According to David Ko, Asia managing director and vice-president of Yahoo’s mobile division, the search giant's mobile service can now be accessed by 600 million subscribers creating “the scale to make mobile advertising attractive.”
OneSearch, Yahoo's mobile search platform, will be distributed via five mobile operators across Asia bringing the total number signed up to date to more than 60 worldwide. Recent Asian deals were struck with Mahanagar Telephon Nigam Limited (India), Digital Mobile Phlis (Philippines), Hong Kong CSL Limited, Smart Communications (Philippines) and Vibo (Taiwan).
Yahoo still has a way to go before it can challenge Google’s leading 61% provider share, even though its 18% share put the firm in second place.
Yahoo does, however, have more users of mobile mail in the U.S., with 15 million compared to Google’s 9 million. Mobile mail is the second most popular activity on mobile devices after search.
