NYTimes.com launches social network
The New York Times has launched a new social networking service that it hopes will extend its reach to encompass those Internet users who are heavy users of online communities.
Called TimesPeople, New York Times’ latest digital offering is, essentially, a social network for Times readers. Its main function appears to be more of a social bookmarking affair. TimesPeople members can recommend and share content such as articles, videos and blog posts with their group of Times reading friends, or with their other social networks including Facebook and Friendfeed.
Future enhancements include the ability to import Google contacts, a link-in with The New York Times' registration and improvements to the people search.
TimesPeople is the latest digital offering from The New York Times. Recently the newspaper launched TimesMachine, an ad-supported archive of papers from 1851-1922 and introduced a service whereby users can read stories via text message.

Comments
Last month, NYTimes.com launched the beta version of TimesPeople, a social network that enables readers to share their thoughts and recommendations about NYTimes.com content with others. Members who opt in to TimesPeople can make their comments, recommendations, reviews and ratings visible to other users and view the activities of other members. Once a user signs up, the TimesPeople toolbar appears at the top of every NYTimes.com page. ------------------------ christina. Social Bookmarking
