Safety of personal data still concerns Internet users
The U.K.’s communications industry watchdog, Ofcom, has released a new report which shows many Britons remain concerned about the amount of personal data being held about them by businesses.
Sixty-nine percent of the 3,000 British adults surveyed for Ofcom’s report said they were concerned about the amount of personal data that businesses held about them.
Despite Internet users being happier to provide personal information online nowadays compared to 3 years ago, identify fraud and data loss concerns have risen 15% over the same period.
Eleven percent of those surveyed still fail to check out a website before divulging their personal information and remain at risk from phishers and hackers.
“This research helps Ofcom understand how people’s use of digital technology has changed as it becomes ever more a part of our lives,” said Ofcom partner for content and standards Stewart Purvis. “Although we have come a long way in the past few years, we need to ensure that people are not left behind by the pace of change.”
