Google widens search lead

Google is the only one of the large search engines to have increased its share of market over the last few months, despite a slight drop in searches by Americans, finds comScore.

by Helen Leggatt

Google extended its search market share to 61.6% in April, up from 59.8%. Other major search engines saw declines – Yahoo came second to Google with 20.4% of market, a decrease of 0.9% in April.

Microsoft, AOL and Ask all saw their market share drop slightly, too.

During the same period the number of searches conducted by Americans on the core search engines dropped 2% to 10.6 billion during April, found comScore. Meanwhile, Google managed to increase its search queries by 1% from 6.44 billion to 6.51 billion.

Yahoo had 2.2 billion search queries in April, AOL 491 million and Ask 458 million.
