Coupon, comparison sites experience traffic growth

Coupon websites and comparison shopping engines are seeing increased traffic compared to this time last year, according to Hitwise Intelligence.

hitwise%20logo2.gifConsumers are tightening their belts as fuel and food prices take their toll. Visits to comparison shopping engines during the week ending May 3, was up 75% on the same period last year, according to Hitwise Intelligence.

Product categories that received the most referrals from comparison shopping engines during April this year were House & Garden, Apparel and Appliances & Electronics.

Coupon websites are also experiencing increases in traffic and searches for the term “coupon” were up 45% year on year. Hitwise found that the most popular coupon search terms were “grocery”, “printable” and “free”.

Hitwise Intelligence noted an 85% year-on-year rise across their custom category of 11 printable coupon websites. “While these websites represent a small percentage when compared to all Internet activities, they offer a good opportunity to influence offline sales for purchases – particularly for companies that sell consumer packaged goods,” writes Heather Dougherty, Director of Research at Hitwise in her blog.
