PicLens: Publishers can engage more with photos
Publishers looking for a better way to engage readers might take another look at the pictures included with their blog posts, news stories and RSS feeds. Rather than using small, captioned shots a new interface from CoolIris called PicLens allows pictures to be used full-screen.
Though the interface is, thus far, non-revenue building there are plans to include a revenue building model in the future. In the mean time, better engaging readers with more involved pictures is a good way to keep them on-site and reading the content. And, as publishers know, the length of time consumers spend on-site is important to existing advertising models.
Here is how PicLens works: the photos are embedded into the webpages normally, but when a user mouses over or clicks on the photo, it enlarges to a full-screen version. This interactivity brings the picture into better focus no matter what was caught by the photographer. By offering larger version of the existing pictures, publishers can create an immersive online experience for readers and consumers.
Currently the interface has been integrated into popular photo-sharing sites like PhotoBucket and social networks like Facebook and Bebo. Freewebs has also allowed it to be used on their user pages.
