Hitwise: Google takes record share of search
Google notched up its highest proportion of U.S. Internet searches to date earlier this year, according to new data released by Hitwise.
During March, a smidge over 67% of all U.S. Internet searches were done via Google. This share of market vastly outpaces the competition with Yahoo Search in second place (20.3%) followed by MSN Search (6.6%) and Ask.com (4.1%).
Both Google and Ask.com made year-on-year gains, according to Hitwise’s Search Engine Analysis Tool, with 3% and 0.5% respectively, whereas Yahoo Search and MSN Search both made year-on-year losses.
The remaining 46 search engines included in the analysis account for just 1.72% of U.S. Internet searches.
Hitwise also revealed that some key industries were experiencing double-digit growth in terms of traffic sent direct from search engines, in particular Business & Finance, Entertainment and Sport.
