Google presents VisualRank

At this year’s International World Wide Web Conference, held in Beijing, Google announced it was continuing to develop precision image search technologies.

by Helen Leggatt

Image search engines currently find and rank images based on their text descriptions and it’s long been a holy grail to make image searches more refined and relevant.

To this end, Google has announced prototype image search technology during the recent International World Wide Web Conference. They are calling it “VisualRank”, and it will rank images on their visual “themes” rather than the descriptive text allocated by the website. VisualRank will rank images based on a "common visual theme", such as the golden arches for McDonald’s or the Shell logo, by using algorithms to blend image-recognition software methods with techniques for ranking images that look most similar.

Google researchers have concentrated on the 2,000 most popular product queries on Google’s product search and sorted the top 10 images using both the new ranking system and the standard Google image search results. According to a team of people that scored the resulting images for relevancy, VisualRank returned 83% less irrelevant images.

VisualRank could aid advertisers and marketers with product searches, particularly with searches such as “more products like this”.
