Survey: Internet primary source of news
The Internet is now the most frequently used and important source of news in the U.S., outweighing newspapers, television and radio, according to a recent survey by We Media/Zogby Interactive.
Nearly half of the 1,979 survey respondents said their primary source of news now comes from the Internet. That’s an 8% rise on last year’s figures. Not only that, but websites were also cited as being more trustworthy sources, with almost a third (32%) saying they were the most trusted followed by newspapers (22%), television (21%) and radio (15%).
The survey found that age matters. “Digital natives” – those aged between 18 and 29 - were even more likely to turn to the Internet for news than older age groups. Over half (55%) get their news and information online, compared with just 35% of those aged 65 and over, some of whom continue to stick with print (17%).
“We see clearly the generational shift of digital natives from traditional to online news - so the challenge for traditional news companies is complex,” said Andrew Nachison, co-founder of iFOCOS.
“They need to invest in new products and services - and they have. But they've also got to invest in quality, influence and impact. They need to invest in journalism that makes a difference in people's lives. That's a moral and leadership challenge - and a business opportunity for whoever can meet it."
More findings from the We Media/Zogby Interactive survey can be found on their website.

Quick correction: It's actually an 8% rise not a 40% rise on last years figures, in regard to respondents who named the internet as a primary source of news.
