comScore: Emerging markets key to online growth
In 1996, US users accounted for 66% of the world's Internet population. That is only one of many things that have changed in the past twelve years. According to a recent comScore report, only 22% of the world's online population is now from the US and emerging markets are pushing growth in the digital realm.
In 2008, more than 300 million users are from the Asia/Pacific region, Europe had 232 million and North America had 183 million users. Latin America accounts for 59 million users and the Middle East/Africa region accounts for nearly 40 million users. Asia, the Middle East and Latin America each accounted for more than 10% growth from 2007 to 2008; the Middle East showed the most growth at more than 20%.
More users means a great possibility for retail growth, and most online marketers still turn to search first because that is where many consumers first look for products and information. Just under 10 billion searches were performed in the US alone during the month of February 2008.
Most searchers used Google (59% search share); a slight increase over January search rankings. Yahoo remained firmly in second place with a 21% search share, a slight decrease over January. Microsoft ranked third with a 9% search share.
