Mobile is growing to "always on" functionality
Not only is the mobile Internet growing, mobile users are increasingly turning to "always on" functionality. This is good news for mobile marketers who should be able to platform this always on phenomena to increase mobile revenue.
According to a recent ABI Research report worldwide shipments of always on mobile devices will reach 3.5 million this year. By 2012, always on mobile shipments are forecasted to reach nearly 90 million. These devices are most likely to appeal to Generation Y Social Networks, Multi-media Enthusiasts, Business Application Users. Soccer Moms and Younger Gamers are two more segments which are expected to show great interest in always on functionality.
These devices will make it easier for users to stay in touch with their friends and share information but are also expected to serve as a help to users. Consumers with medical conditions, for example, may be able to track some of their health information via their mobile devices.
There is a drawback to these devices: one device may not be enough. For the minimalists out there who don’t want to carry multiple devices, these always on devices will likely not catch on or will catch with users on at a much slower rate.
