comScore's global search engine ranking
A recent comScore ranking of the top 10 global search engines found that it wasn’t Microsoft that came third to the behemoths Google and Yahoo, it was a Chinese-language search engine.
Unsurprisingly, Google and Yahoo topped comScore’s recent global search engine rankings. Of the 66.2 billion search queries conducted in December, 2007, 62.4 percent were via Google sites and 12.8 were via Yahoo sites.
But it was Chinese-language search engine Baidu that came in third, accounting for just over 5 percent share, ahead of Microsoft who languished in fourth with a share slightly under 3 percent.
Baidu leads the search engine market in China with just over 60 percent share of market. Google sits in second with 25.9 percent followed by Yahoo China (9.6 percent).
Another Chinese search engine, Alibaba, was also in comScore’s top 10 with 0.8 percent of the global market.
Of interesting note is that comScore’s figures included only data from home and corporate Internet connections. Internet cafes were not included in the study yet they are a major point of access for many Chinese as many are unable to afford home access.
