British shoppers splash out online
If British shoppers didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas they more than likely joined the online masses who contributed to the growth in Internet sales during January.
More was spent online in the U.K. during January of 2008, than has been spent in any other January.
IMRG Capgemini’s e-Retail Sales Index showed an increase in spending of 75% YoY to $8.8 billion, falling short of December’s record $10.6 billion.
Electrical items and clothing were the most popular purchases, with consumers spending 38% and 32% more, respectively, than in January, 2007. Health and beauty products sales grew 18% YoY in January, 2008, and beers, wines and spirits just under 10%.
"The results show the maturity of the online market, with consumers being more confident about buying goods online,” said Anthoula Madden, vice-president, Capgemini U.K.'s consumer products and retail team.
“At the same time, the economic situation has been tough and people may have held their spending back until the January sales started this year. The growth in revenues was probably driven by seasonal discounting," she added.
