Motorola to launch on-demand mobile television
Forget about phones as conversation pieces. Now it appears that one mobile phone company is betting on television being the next big phone offering. Their new mobile media player allows users to watch live television.
In addition to television programming, users can watch on-demand and can also view programs saved to a DVR. The platform is compatible with the DVB-H mobile broadcasting standard, which could spell a slower acceptance for US users because DVB-H, while standard in Europe, is not the standard in the US.
Still the offering is a glimpse at what one cell phone company feels is the next wave of popularity.
Portability is key for those interested in downloadable video. According to a recent Parks Associates report portable media players will grow at a rate of 30% through 2012, with more than 130 million players delivered in 2011 alone.
Meanwhile eMarketer projects that mobile advertising will continue to climb over the next four years. Their research has found that more than 40% of US viewers would watch commercials in exchange for free video offerings on their mobile phones. The mobile ad spend is expected to reach more than $1.5 billion in 2008 and to reach $3.5 billion by 2011 (globally).
